Guidelines for the preparation of doctoral dissertations at the Graduate
\r\nSchool of Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u3000Students wishing to request a dissertation review are required to prepare documentsaccording to the guidelines herein. If there are any deficiencies in the documents, they shall not be accepted. Ensure your documents are checked by your academic supervisor and the Student Affairs Section of the Graduate School of Engineering before submission.
\r\n
\r\nI\u3000Dissertation<\/b>
\r\n\u30001.\u3000The dissertation shall be written in Japanese or English.
\r\n\u30002.\u3000The dissertation shall be submitted in digital format and
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 in soft-bound paper.
\r\n\u30003.\u3000The PDF data shall be prepared according to the guidelines
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 in attachment 1 (PDF)<\/a>.
\r\n\u30004.\u3000The PDF file of the dissertation shall be prepared according to the <\/span>
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 guidelines provided on the
Kobe University Library website (PDF)<\/a>.
\r\n\u30005.\u3000The dissertation front cover and spine shall follow the format
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 in
attachment 2 (PDF)<\/a>.
\r\n\u30006.\u3000The paper size shall be A4.
\r\n\u30007.\u3000The paper shall be fine white paper.
\r\n\u30008.\u3000The dissertation shall be written horizontally on portrait-oriented
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 paper.
\r\n\u30009.\u3000If the thesis is handwritten, it should be written carefully in block
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 letters and foreign words should be typed.
\r\n\u00a010.\u3000Once a dissertation is submitted, no change or replacement will be
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 allowed. However, wording changes that do not significantly alter
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the dissertation content, and typographical error corrections may be
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 made upon approval of the Dean of the Graduate School, before
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the dissertation review is completed.
\r\n\u00a011.\u3000For a co-authored paper where the applicant is not the first author,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the applicant’s contribution to the paper should be briefly explained
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 in the designated section of the appendix “Supplementary information
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 on research achievements”, following the provided example.
\r\n
\r\nII\u3000Dissertation abstract<\/b>
\r\n\u30001.\u3000The dissertation abstract shall be written horizontally
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 on portrait-oriented A4 paper and all pages shall be stapled together.
\r\n\u30002.\u3000The title (including a subtitle) on the abstract shall be exactly the
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 same as the one on the dissertation to be submitted.
\r\n\u30003.\u3000The abstract shall contain 1,200 to 2,400 words in English and 2,000
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 to 4,000 characters in Japanese.
\r\n\u30004.\u3000In case the dissertation comprises multiple chapters, the abstract
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 shall be written in the order of chapters.
\r\n\u30005.\u3000The abstract is also required to follow the instructions 1 to 9
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 of the above-mentioned section I.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nIII\u3000Dissertation review request<\/b>
\r\n\u3000Four copies of the dissertation are required to be submitted when
\r\nthere are three dissertation examiners (and one additional copy
\r\nshall be submitted per additional examiner). Two copies of the dissertation
\r\nbibliography shall be submitted regardless of the number of examiners.
\r\n
\r\nIV\u3000Dissertation bibliography<\/b>
\r\n\u30001. Title
\r\n\u3000\u3000(1) The title (including a subtitle) shall be stated as stated
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 on the dissertation to be submitted.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(2) If the title is in English, the Japanese translation shall be
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 provided underneath the English title in parentheses.
\r\n\u30002. Publication method and date:
\r\n\u3000\u3000(1) The dissertation shall be formally published in a publication,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 such as a book or a scholarly journal.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(2) In principle, the entire dissertation shall be published without
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 any changes. However, you may make minor corrections or exclude
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 a part of the dissertation unless it directly impacts the research
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 content when published. Also, the dissertation may be considered as
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 having been formally published, even when the content of
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the dissertation was published under a different title.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(3) The dissertation may be divided and published in separate
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 publications based on structural segments, such as chapters or
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 sections, or based on the research topics.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(4) The published dissertation shall be archived as scholarly material
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 at universities and other academic institutions, and is to be
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 available for public reading at any time.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(5) The dissertation shall be considered as having been formally
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 published, even if it appeared in a private publication or another
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 type of publication with a limited number of subscribers, as long as
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the publication has been distributed to universities and other
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 academic institutions. In that case, a list of the institutions is
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 required to be submitted.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(6) For dissertations that have been published in their entirety,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the year and month of publication, the name of the journal
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (volume and number in the case of a journal) or the name of
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the book in which the dissertation was published, etc. shall be
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 indicated. For the dissertations published in volumes, chapters,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 etc., the method and time of publication shall be indicated for
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 each category.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(7) If chapters or sections of the dissertation have been published
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 under titles different from the title of the dissertation itself,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 and you wish to have the dissertation considered to have been
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 formally published, please provide the published titles.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(8) The list of papers should only include those that have already
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 been published or have been accepted for publication.
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 (9) Unpublished papers that are “under submission” or “to be submitted”
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 cannot be included in the list of papers, but should be noted
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 in the Appendix “Supplementary Information on Research Achievements”.
\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\u3000\u3000(1) Write the number of volumes that the dissertation comprises.
\r\n\u3000\u3000(2) When attaching figures and other supporting materials as separate
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 volumes, the number of these volumes shall be included. However,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 when figures and other supporting materials are not bound into a
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 volume, but are just attachments, write as \u201cX volumes
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (with attached figures).\u201d
\r\n
\r\n\u3000\u3000*\u3000<\/span>Do not write the number of copies of the dissertation you submit,
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0but the number of volumes that make up the dissertation itself.
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0For example, if you have two volumes (one for the dissertation and

\r\nV\u3000Curriculum vitae<\/b>
\r\n\u30001. Name
\r\n\u3000\u3000Write your name as it appears on your passport.<\/span> Do not use nicknames
\r\n\u3000\u00a0 or pseudonyms. (This also applies to the other documents.)
\r\n\u30002. Current address
\r\n\u3000\u3000(1) Write your current official home address as stated on your
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0certificate of residence (j\u016bminhy\u014d<\/em>).
\r\n\u3000\u3000(2) To ensure smooth communication, also write the name of your
\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0apartment or dormitory and your room number.
\r\n\u30003. Education
\r\n\u3000\u3000(1) List your education chronologically after graduation from

\r\nVI\u3000Reference thesis<\/b>
\r\n\u00a0A dissertation that is complementary in content to the dissertation
\r\n\u00a0to be submitted and that is an integral part of the dissertation
\r\n\u00a0to be examined may be submitted as a reference dissertation.
\r\n\u00a0In such a case, an excerpt of the thesis must be submitted in addition
\r\n\u00a0to the number of thesis examiners plus one copy.
\r\n
\r\nVII\u3000Name notation<\/b>
\r\n(1) The name should be written in the same style for all documents submitted.
\r\n\u00a0 Example: International students whose names are not written in the same
\r\n\u00a0 style (e.g., SMITH JOHN \/ Smith John \/ John Smith) are not acceptable.
\r\n
\r\n(2) For international students, names should be written in the same order as
\r\n\u00a0 in the passport.
\r\n\u00a0 Example: If the name is not consistent (SMITH JOHN \/ Smith John
\r\n\u00a0 \/ John Smith) depending on the document, it will not be accepted.
\r\n
\r\n(3) Chinese students do not need to use the same Chinese kanji as in their
\r\n\u00a0 passport (Japanese kanji may be used). However, if the name is written
\r\n\u00a0 in Chinese kanji, the name should be written using English characters as
\r\n\u00a0 in the passport as well.
\r\n
\r\nVIII\u3000Dissertation title<\/b>
\r\n(1) If the title of the dissertation is in English, ensure that\u00a0
\r\n\u00a0 capitalization is consistent across all submitted documents.
\r\n\u00a0 Example: Documents with inconsistent capitalization in the title are
\r\n\u00a0 not acceptable.
